Redesign: Version 2.2.0

In December of 2014, we launched the new F Plus site. We switched the site from what was a generic Joomla install and converted all that content into something custom built to support all the various projects we end up doing here. And in the time since, I've played with the code running the site. Many, many many times. I've set up all the episodes with Schema Data. I've written a bunch of different attempts at service workers. I've rewritten the CSS structure with Flexbox, and then again with CSS Grid. I made a random episode selector, a tag navigator and a combined stats page. None of this was necessary. Very little of this was something anybody ever asked me for, and none of it really…

Saturday, October 27th & Sunday, October 28th Yes, we're doing this again. Our seventh F Plus Live is coming to Seattle, and we're going to make a mess of the place. We'll perform playlets, we'll prove the existence of Bigfoot, and most importantly, we'll read a whole bunch of crap out loud. Tickes for the show are waitlist-only, but there are still some very limited tix for the afterparty the next day. THE…
A month ago, I wrote An Adventure In Analytics, describing how user privacy and accurate reporting find themselves at odds with each other. I said that I know that I'm getting traffic that I'm not reporting, and promised that I would be running two different analytic suites (Google Analytics and Piwik) side by side for a month, to see how each reported data. Broadly, the thesis here is that some ad blockers…
It was only yesterday that I learned that I learned that The JuggaloCoin (the oft-reported juggalos-only currency developed by Papa Nutt) is no longer with us; The JuggaloCoin is not being traded publicly and perhaps even more tragically, juggalocoin.org just brings up a squatters’ page now. This discovery led to some related discoveries, which in turn led to this page: a list of all (?) 705 publicly traded c…
In the beginning of May, we published this blog post explaining our basic premise: We received a $20 donation with the instruction that the money should be spent on the outsource freelancing site Fiverr. The idea was a sound one, so we opened it up to the community. People would suggest Fiverr gigs and vote up their favorites. I would buy the 3 gigs that got the most bulbs (the ballpit equivalent of upvoting), as…
We've been asked a couple times now about how we put these episodes together, so if you're looking to set up a remote podcast, this is how we do it. Update 11/17/2016: Some of our methods have changed since this article was originally written, edits have been made to reflect those changes. How do you record? When recording a podcast with people in different places, the first step is to get isolated audio for each…
Nearly a year ago now, I wrote this blog post about how and why The F Plus was trying Flattr to accept voluntary donations to the podcast. I explained my reasons for trying, and described the whole thing as "an experiment". That experiment has now concluded. Firstly, I want to start by saying that I recognize that a number of people did, indeed, push the Flattr button to contribute monetarily to the…
This page was updated Jan 1st, 2019. The F Plus' logo was modified on June 26th, 2015 to a simpler and derivative-friendly version of the same shapes we've used since the podcast's inception. On this page you'll find a few use cases, the color palette, some files you can download, and a longer explanation and tips. SAMPLE USE on light background on dark background monochrome with text with text,…
Some sites make you sign up to see everything. While HypnoLoser may not have a problem with using his personal email address, let's say you don't want to hand out your email to any and all weird websites you come across. But you still want to be able to sign up. What you want is a burner email. A burner email is a temporary address you set up, use, and then forget. There are lots of sites out there that offer…
Prologue: This is a piece all about what happens in the Black Mirror episode White Christmas. It was originally supposed to go in the ballp.it TeeVee forum but then it got too long and ended up here instead. If you don't want this episode spoiled, don't read this. For the record, a lot of the other Black Mirror episodes are good. So the thing starts out promising enough. The always reclusive and camera shy Jon Hamm…
Before we start, I recognize that it's kind of suicidal to say unkind things about iTunes. This is a website for a podcast, people listen to podcasts with iTunes. The majority of our listeners (an altogether nerdier and more tech-savvy group than most) still uses iTunes to listen to our podcast, as do a number of the ridiculists, and we take extra effort to make sure that's still a comfortable and easy process. But…
Hi there, let me show you around. As you can see, a lot of what's here is significantly different than it used to be. Personally, we think it's a whole lot better. I know change is hard, but I'm thinking once you get used to the new format, you'll like it a lot better. Let me show you a couple of things that are new. explore the miserable world of The F Plus The old site had tags and search, and neither of them…
