Episode 87: So, Clearly You All Hate Us

READERS: John, Acierocolotl, Boots Raingear, Isfahan, Portaxx, and Lemon

Edited by Portaxx

A little while ago, we opened it up to you, The F Plus listeners, to provide us with some of the most intensely absurd material we could find. Then we had troubles releasing episodes regularly, but the two are unrelated. The point is, we sounded the alarm, and several people inundated us with crazy. To celebrate that fact, we have here a selection of three of the most irritating and/or baffling submissions of the lot, wrapped up with a little bow. You know, for fun. This week, we introduce Jenny J Jay Number J.

and yes there is a Gigantism describes accelerated growth during childhood from the production of excess growth hormone. By definition, gigantism must occur during childhood before the growth plates in the long bones of the body (for example, the femur or humerus) have closed. In adults, the condition is called acromegaly.

Gigantism is most often caused by a benign tumor on the pituitary gland called a pituitary adenoma. However, it can also be caused by the following disorders:

neurofibromatosis
McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS)
Carney complex
multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1

What are the symptoms and signs of gigantism?
abnormally tall stature
abnormal growth of the face, hands and feet
thickened facial features
irregular menstrual cycle
excessive perspiration with slight activity
delayed puberty
double vision
deafness
headache

Quick and dirty and I'll stop talking about French in a podcast about nutters.

We're subject to L'Académie française as well, though we have our own regional dialects. (There's a nice youtube thing on jouale if you search for that, it's the first hit.)

Historically, Quebec was settled by the French from between 1600 or so 'til 1800, but on account of all the wars both in Europe and North America, was essentially cut off. French linguists like to find remote villages in northern Quebec as the French they speak there hasn't really changed much over the centuries, so in a sense much of our French is still the oldest.

That's all out in Montreal, though, which is wildly cosmopolitan, and the cringe-worthy "anglo-bureaucr atic French" spoken in Ottawa, but that's another long ramble best-suited elsewhere entirely.

We've got guys who dress up in Napoleon style clothing who dictate whether and ant is masculine or feminine.

Also holy crap you guys put every image I made up there, including the great vagina one which had nothing to do with the podcast! You have terrible taste and I love you for that!

I've heard that Canadian french dialect is probably based on old french dialect.

It's like what American English is to British English - elements of 17thc. accent, grammar and vocab that died out on one side of the pond preserved on the other. It's just the French are presciptivist jerks beyond the snobbiest English.

One of my French teachers in high school, who was from France, hated Quebecois with a passion. "It's not real French!" Is this a common sentiment?

Yes.

In playing tourguide for some touring Parisians, they called me a farmer in a disdainful tone when they thought I wasn't paying attention. I was just trying to be helpful since their English was toothgrindingly atrocious, and I wasn't even busting out the jouale.

(There's a Quebecois dialect called "jouale", so-named because it's so lazy and mushmouthed that that's how they pronounce the word "cheval".)

I don't really favour sites that have casual French writing, because the linguistic differences between the continents are pretty remarkable in places, and here's the most vivid example.

One of my French teachers in high school, who was from France, hated Quebecois with a passion. "It's not real French!" Is this a common sentiment?

I've also known people like this. I had a Regional French Cuisine instructor who was really down on Montreal in particular. My favorite thing she said about it was "Montreal is the Alsace of North America", which I guess was supposed to be a put down? We weren't supposed to repeat any of this in earshot of our other French instructor, who happened to be from Montreal.
