Content's coming soonish.

Just wanted to leave a quick note: We have a couple episodes recorded and waiting to be released, the editing has just been a little backlogged at the moment.

I think Let's Playing has sort of devolved into a stand-up comedy type of thing, whereby if you go to a show you'll do it for a specific comedian. In Youtube especially, you have Mario games being played just because the personality whom you only hear is popular enough to warrant playing a game.

I used to love those LPs of games I hadn't heard of on Something Awful. Crimson Skies by ResearchIndicat es is the one that springs to mind.

The general thing that gets goon hackles up is when an LP is obviously not about the game being played, but rather the person playing it. You see this a lot in YouTube LPs nowadays. The person playing will put a picture-in-picture shot of themselves playing the game, and you're just marveling at what a self-obsessed douchebag they are.

This is huge pet peeve of mine. My sister has tried to make me watch some Youtube LPs, but I usually get tired of the douche in the corner making inside jokes and doing stupid things on purpose in the belief it's "funny". That and the comments of course. Youtube LP "superstars" tend to have the most obnoxious fanboys imaginable.

I'd have to agree. When you watch a non-blind let's play on youtube, the player almost never ads significant content to the video. Sometimes they'll talk a little bit about what they're doing, but it just ends up sounding like a bad gamefaqs walkthrough.

Compare to CannibalK9's let's play of The Void, a game with a neat concept, incredible atmosphere, and not much else. His soothing commentary, serving as a sort of narrator, fills in the empty and repetitive portions of the game with speculation on the cryptic and mysterious dialog, along with a very thorough demonstration of the areas, abilities and bosses. I left feeling that I had fully experienced the game, without actually having to endure the tedium of playing it. Even having a copy, I think I would rather just watch the LP than play it.

I'm more than a little biased, but generally any LP to come out of SomethingAwful is likely to be a cut above some of the self-indulgent crap smeared across YouTube, if for no other reason than goons are constantly spoiled by getting high-quality stuff from fellow goons.

The general thing that gets goon hackles up is when an LP is obviously not about the game being played, but rather the person playing it. You see this a lot in YouTube LPs nowadays. The person playing will put a picture-in-pict ure shot of themselves playing the game, and you're just marveling at what a self-obsessed douchebag they are.

TotalBiscuit/Cynical Brit got his start doing LPs on SomethingAwful, then he promptly disappeared from LP after he "made it" and it's sort of a sore point amongst goons now that he "sold out, maaan," using them as a stepping stone.

This brief Let's Play primer was brought to you by Isfahan.

There's the Giant Bomb endurance runs of Persona 4 and Deadly Premonition, all of which are awesome and hilarious.

I also like the Farenheit LP by Jesse Cox, he's really enthusiastic about the game.

Raocow has a very unique style of freewheeling, stream of consciousness commentary. I like his Bunny Must Die playthrough.

Tipping Forties, though they recently disbanded, are a consistently funny 4 (3 for first and last LPs) person team that has a ridiculous backlog. They all have a unique brand of humor and can make even Shenmue entertaining with their banter. They have a 50 episode podcast as well.

Spoiler Warning is along the same vein, but they have a more critical eye and generally more serious discussion of game mechanics and plot holes. They bash several very acclaimed games.

The LP Archive contains pretty much every LP ever finished on the something awful forums.

If you don't know which one to pick, I can recommend almost every LP done by Chip and Ironicus, especially the Metal Gear LPs and The 50 cent Lp is really hilarious.

If you like history lessons, I can recommend the Assassin's Creed LPs by Geop.

Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation fame also posts on his youtube channel LPs of old point and click adventure games and comments on them with one of his friends.

And finally I have to mention an LP of Super Mario 64 played by a guy who used his feet.

Enjoy

I saw a lot of pages back that Isfahan did LPs, does anyone else do them? I like listening to people talk about video games whilst playing them!

Basically I'd just want a very short version that still keeps the basic story intact, while including lines that would just be hilarious to read.

How long is the unedited version? Can someone provide me with incentive to read it and post it à la Eye of Argon? Because I will totally do it.

I'd really love to do a short on it because I'm tired of every corner of the internet telling me "omg it's the cutest, saddest thing everrrrr ;_;" Basically I'd just want a very short version that still keeps the basic story intact, while including lines that would just be hilarious to read.

Portaxx you just killed my weekend off because I can totally make that happen.

HOORAY! I guess if you need a guideline for length, the edit of Rare Blood (from episode 51) is about the length it would need to be. A little longer is fine since it's better to have too much than too little. I know that's pretty short compared to the original! But I love the idea of reducing the story to just a few crazy paragraphs, and then showing off the allegedly heartbreaking ending with the "goodbye, I love yoouuu T_T' letter and all that crap. It's just too perfect.

Anyway YAY THANK YOU ^_^

I SWEAR SOMETHING NEW IS GOING UP SOON. I finished editing it the day before yesterday and it just needs to go up. I even made something extra to make up for the long wait.

I sometimes listen to an episode in audacity with the different effects and filters put on it. For example, the episodes where fanfiction is read become 20% more funny put into a lower speed (roughly -20 to understand what they are saying) so that when they laugh, it sounds like monsters.

Alternatively, I just find other similar podcasts to listen to.

Download all of the episodes and make a playlist in your MP3 player or program of your choice. Then hit the random button on that.

It's what I do!

Hey Isfahan, I had never heard of the eye of argon! It is incredible stuff. Reading text occupies your whole concentration, and it isn't worth it if it's cruddy when you have other things you could be doing, but hearing it while I burn up some bratkartoffelen is the best of both worlds.

Cheers!

Now that you mention it, montrith, he also spent two paragraphs describing a guy getting kicked in the balls, his reaction to getting kicked in the balls, and how surprised everyone else around him was that a ball-kicking had taken place. I think something might be going on with that, too.

Words

I loved the little pause every time you tried to figure out how to pronounce another made up fantasy word. I hope you suffered no ill-effects from this feat, since once or twice it sounded like you were about to faint from lack of breath.

Hearing it read aloud, I realize for the first time how homoerotic EoA really is. With all the thrusting swords, heaving pommels and lustful battles one cannot but feel Unpronounceable Name here is hiding something from his wench.

Sir, you may expect to receive proof of my donation within the week. Best $100 I've ever spent.

Cool!

As an added bonus for everyone, here's a scan of the typesetting in the original zine in which it appeared.

Please note that page 49 is "the lost ending," and is generally agreed upon by all serious Eye-of-Argon scholars to be fake.

I didn't know that! The paperback special edition I bought claims that the "lost ending" is the real deal, found in a complete copy of the original zine in some library in Upper East Jesus.

Also, thank you for finally solving the age-old question of how to pronounce "Mrifk".

ohhh god don't even
*stuff*

The sad thing about this is that even if I do manage to find something funny on there, I probably won't be able to laugh quite as much as I would otherwise because of the proximity to people with actual issues.

Like, the asexual episode was awesome because of how surreal it was. These people were having some weird special snowflake party where only the chronically oblivious are invited, and I laughed at asexual erasure and went to the tag looking for a goldmine and found queenieofaces.tumblr.com/.../. ..

It's like a comedy minefield, step on the wrong post and you ruin the entire thing. Thankfully the Ridiculists are excellent at navigating it and putting together a thoroughly funny episode on pretty much any topic, as the abovementioned Ace episode shows.
